4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive enables the vehicle to move off and accelerate powerfully – even on poor road surfaces and in adverse weather conditions. 4MATIC is always active and requires no response time to intervene.
Enormously powerful: The electronic traction system ETS makes conventional differential locks unnecessary with automatic brake impulses that improve traction on slippery surfaces and increase stability during demanding driving manoeuvres.
Low weight: Thanks to a compact design, an intelligent choice of materials and high efficiency, there is hardly any weight increase compared with the rear-wheel drive model.
Supporting systems: 4MATIC all-wheel drive is supported by the Electronic Stability Program ESP® and the Electronic Traction System 4ETS. Spinning wheels are braked systematically and the torque is automatically distributed to the wheels with sufficient traction.
AMG models: The performance-oriented 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system of the E 63 AMG developed by Mercedes-AMG provides a combination of maximum traction and neutral handling typical of AMG. This is the result of a planetary centre differential with a rear-biased torque split of 33 : 67 and a slight basic locking force. Dependent on the selected ESP® stage, selective brake interventions at individual wheels (torque vectoring) and engine management adjustments counter the initial understeer typical of all-wheel-drive systems. The result is an agile and at the same time comfortable turn-in of the vehicle toward the centre of the curve.
